RECOMMENDED: Moon (Duncan Jones 2009) The feature film directorial debut of Duncan Jones (who also co-wrote the story), Moon is a psychological sci-fi drama starring Sam Rockwell and featuring the voice of Kevin Spacey. Sam Bell (Rockwell) is an astronaut miner working in solitude for a major corporation on the moon, extracting moon rock. He is at the end of his three year contract in which the only company he has had is in the form a GERTY (Spacey), a robot there to assist him. The wear of three years of solitude is starting to show and whilst out on his lunar rover, he has an accident after he experiences a hallucination of a girl outside on the lunar surface. When he comes to, he cant recall the accident and is instructed by GERTY to remain inside the base. Suspicious, he comes up with an excuse to leave the base and returns to the scene of the accident, only to find himself still unconscious in his lunar rover. After he brings himself back to the base and the other Sam awakens, the two men start coming to terms with what might really be happening inside their moon base. An extremely confident debut by Duncan Jones, Moon is a great looking small-scale science fiction film, which clearly wears its seventies sci-fi influences on its sleeve. Sam Rockwell carries the film with a performance which shows the same man at different stages and Spaceys voice work is pitch perfect for the robotic GERTY. The film is at once a criticism of capitalism as well as a psychological study of its main charcter with some mystery thrown in for good measure. Moon won a BAFTA Award for Outstanding Debut by a British Director, Best British Independent Film and the Douglas Hickox Award for Duncan at the British Independent Film Awards as well as four awards at Sitges for Best Film, Actor, Art Direction and Screenplay. https://youtube/watch?v=twuScTcDP_Q
