RECOMMENDED: Poetry (Chang-dong Lee 2010) Written and directed by Chang-dong Lee, Poetry is a South Korean drama starring Jeong-hie Yun, a prolific South Korean actress who returned to the screen for this film after an absence of sixteen years. Yang Mija (Yun) is a 66-year old grandmother who lives of welfare, has a job on the side looking after an elderly gentlemen and also takes care of her apathetic teenage grandson whose divorced mother lives in a faraway city. Recently her memory has been getting worse and she is diagnosed with Alzheimers. As a result she starts to crave to express herself and joins a local poetry class to do so and to keep her mind active. Meanwhile, it is revealed that a young girl from her grandsons school recently committed suicide as she had been repeatedly raped over a period of six months. The culprits are her grandson, who seems completely unremorseful, and five of his friends at school. The fathers of the boys all come together and ask Yang Mija to join as they want to pay off the family of the deceased girl in order to persuade them to avoid pressing charges, but Yang Mija isnt convinced this is the best way to deal with the situation... For a movie dealing with such serious and emotional issues like rape and dementia, Poetry is a very restrained and languid film with a distinct lack of sentimentality. Jeong-hie Yuns central performance is fantastic and the film does a fantastic job observing the little details which make up her life. The film won the Best Screenplay Award at Cannes, Best Picture, Screenplay, Actress and Supporting Actor at the Grand Bell Awards as well as Best Picture and Screenplay at the Korean Association of Film Critics Awards. https://youtube/watch?v=fo2dfY317-k
