REFLECTION FOR THE THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR B READINGS: FIRST READING – Jonah 3: 1 – 5. 10. SECOND READING – Corinthians 7: 29 – 31. GOSPEL READING – Mark 1: 14 – 20. THEME: REPENT FOR THE KINGDOM OF GOD IS AT HAND. The three readings of today shows or rather prove that God wants us to be saved. He is never tired of us; though we offend him with our sins, he is always ready and willing to give us a second chance. Jonah in the first reading of today answered the call of God to go and proclaim the Good News to the people of Nineveh. Today, God is calling us to live a life of holiness. God is not satisfied with the way we live our lives. Often we get distracted with the lure of pleasure (pleasures that last for a very short time) and superficial pastimes. (Things that has effect only on our body but not in our soul) Thus, we squander our God-given gifts and time; we squander our money on gambling and drinks. Saint Paul reminds us in the second reading that our life on earth will not last for a very long time. He reminds us that our life is precious and with this fact, we cannot run the risk of spoiling and condemning it by rejecting Christ when he calls us. Let us, as a community and as individuals respond with immediacy, generosity and with determination to the call of God to change our lives. (Like the people of Nineveh) God is calling us to repentance; let us seek direction from the Lord to lead and protect us from the pleasures and temptations of this world. Let us focus on things that really matter; “Let those who deal with the world, act as though they had no dealings with it. For the world is passing away.” In the Gospel reading of today, Jesus himself calls each and every one of us to repentance. He warns us that the world will not last forever including all the things that have to do with the world; all the pleasure and good things of life. (Money, power, and fame.) Let us follow the examples of the Apostles and immediately, leave our nets, our luxury, our power, our fame and follow Christ.
