REMEMBERING OUR HEROES PAST AND PRESENT- SERIES 6 DARU OWEI Dr. Daru Owei: born on the 10th of August, 1949. He attended Igbobi College, Yaba, where he obtained the Higher School Certificate of the University of Cambridge. Prior to attending Igbobi College, he had his Primary School education at the Methodist School, Apapa, Lagos and the Secondary School education at the United Christian Secondary School, in Lagos. While at Igbobi College, he was the Library Prefect and participated actively in Inter-Collegiate Debates and won the African Statesman Award for Inter-Collegiate Debating Contest in 1969. On leaving Igbobi College, he proceeded to the University of Ibadan, Nigeria where he obtained his B.Sc (Economics) degree. He is also a graduate of the University of Tulsa, Tulsa, Oklahoma, USA where he obtained the Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree and the University of Salford, Salford, England where he graduated with a Ph.D (Economics) degree. Dr. Daru Owei has worked in various capacities in industry and government He started his working career after graduation from the University of Ibadan with the Nigerian Agip Oil Co. Limited as a Personnel Officer and worked in various capacities in the company as Training and Development Officer, Organization and Development Officer, Chief Economist, Head of Budget Control, Business and Budget Control Manager. He had also served the company as a Public and Government Affairs Officer, Divisional Manager of the Company in the Abuja Liaison Office and later occupied the position of General Manger, Human Resources and Organization with functions that oversee the Information Communication and Technology and Services Departments. Dr. Owei was later appointed the Deputy Managing Director of the Nigerian Agip Oil Company Limited, a position he occupied until he retired on the 5th of July 2009. He was on the Board of Directors of four ENI Subsidiaries in Nigeria, namely: Nigerian Agip Oil Co. Limited, Agip Energy and Natural Resources Limited, Nigerian Agip Exploration Limited and Nigerian Agip CPFA Limited. Dr. Daru Owei had also served in various capacities in both the old Rivers State Government (which comprises the present Rivers and Bayelsa States) and the Federal Government of Nigeria and also served in Federal and State Government Parastatals. In 1980, the Rivers State Government of Nigeria appointed him the Director of Budget and Control, a position he occupied up to September 1983. He had also served in the transitional Government of General Abdulsalaam Abubakar, as Special Assistant to the Head of State in the Office of the Special Adviser on Petroleum Matters in the Presidency. He served as a Director on the Board of Pabod Finance and Investment Company Limited, Chairman of the African Continental Bank Ltd and Director representing the Oil Companies on the Board of the Niger Delta Development Commission. Dr. Daru Owei has presented papers at International Conferences and has to his credit several publications and awards, including the NIM/Dunlop/British Caledonian Airways Best Manager of the Year Award in 1978 among others. He is a Fellow of the Nigerian Institute of Management and a Justice of the Peace. He is a keen sportsman and plays Squash Racquets, Table Tennis and Lawn Tennis. Members of the Board of Trustees, Igbobi College Old Boys Association, distinguished ladies and gentlemen, may I present to you Dr. Daru Owei, an economist and an exceptional manager of materials and men, for the award in Professional Achievement in Management.
