RESPECT FOR ALL September 16, 2014 Dear Holliswood School Students & Families, As you are aware, at PS/IS178, we believe in the potential of all of our students and remain steadfast in providing the supports needed to ensure our students become productive members of their families and communities. As part of this, we are constantly working to create a school environment in which teaching, learning, and personal development can thrive in order to make success a reality with our students. This means that we must ensure that our school is an emotionally and physically safe space where both students and teachers can work and learn free from fear of harassment, bullying, or discrimination. In the spirit of strengthening our community, the purpose of this letter is to (1) open up dialogue, (2) remind you of some of our rules and expectations and (3) ask for your help in educating your child. As we all know, teaching students to respect and accept differences in people and their respective backgrounds are some of the most important lessons we can impart on our children. Failure to do so sets our children up for failure in life. As such, parents/guardians/families, in order to ensure that your child is educated on respect and acceptance for all, we encourage you to: • Review the Respect for All materials with your family • Speak with your child about culturally insensitive behavior and language. • Speak with your child about the dangers of harassment and bullying based on actual or perceived differences. Over the coming days, we look forward to continuing to work with everyone in our community to set and maintain the kind of positive and supportive culture we need at our school to help ensure everyone’s success.
