RISE OF THE PHOENIX!! As the dust settled at the end of the 2013/2014 season and clubs geared up for the summer months one team were in desperate need to lay back, relax and take a sangria or two and enjoy the nice weather Gibraltar offers. Gibraltar Phoenix had just completed the worst season in the History of the Gibraltar Premier League scoring few, conceding plenty!! Infact, not only the worst team in the Gibraltar Premier League but also the only team to not register a single point in any of the other 53 european nations top flight divisions!! This record is not one to be proud of. But still, with incredible guile and panache, these bunch of lads had the courage, albeit lack of quality, but they did have the courage and tenacity to sweat for their shirt everytime they stepped onto that field, and that is what genuinely won over the crowd and the followers of football in Gibraltar. With the possibility of folding as a team looming in the distance, Phoenix decided to literally take the blow on the chin and come back stronger than ever. Just like that boxer who swears vengeance after being completely destroyed, Phoenix have sweared vengeance on the footballing world. They have a record to set straight. With new coach Adam Golt at the helm they look a completely different team. Chris Aitkinson is also amongst the coaching staff and brings a wealth of experience. Who would have guessed it: Two ex Cannons players (one of the lowest ranked teams in the Second Division for the past few years) leading the Phoenix Revolution and blimey...what a job they are doing. With them they have managed to bring Fernando Cuesta, ex Cannons star player and striker who last season was bagging goals for fun. Also joining them from Cannons they have Luis and Danny, two industrious and creative players which on their day can rip defences apart. So, how is this Phoenix Revolution shaping up? The two preseason friendlies they have had have yielded a 6-0 demolition of College Pegasus and a 3-1 defeat to Manchester 62. It is this last game played against Premier opposition that really puts this revolution in perspective. A solid defensive unit led by Jonathan Cannavaro Field kept the better Manchester team at bay most of the game. In the mide of the park, Luis and Danny were pulling the strings with Luis scoring a belter from Half way line beating Gibraltar International Keeper Louie Barmfather. The strike...that crisp caressing of the ball...we already seem to have the first candidate for goal of the season!!! Its looking positive for the Phoenix and with a few more tweeks they could be a force to be reckoned with in the Second Division. Who knows, if players do actually show some loyalty to the Club they might, just might go a long way to showing that last year was just that...a blow to the chin which they took as men they are!! 5point4, bringing sports to you
