RTEAN Versus NURTW: Violence Looms In Oyo Tension appears to be rising in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, over the lingering face-off between the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) and the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) with the latter calling on the state government to wade into the seeming crisis so as not to puncture the existing peace in the state. The two groups have had some violent clashes before the current administration of Governor Abiola Ajimobi assumed office in 2011. Indications of the emerging crisis played out yesterday when the executives of RTEAN held a press conference at their headquaters in Muslim area of Ibadan, where some of the issues that could lead to the crisis were discussed. The RTEAN alleged that the state government had not been fair to it with some of the promises it made, saying that it was the responsibility of the government to stop the NURTW from kicking RTEAN out of motor parks across the state. It alleged that it received only nine out of the 33 Urvan buses that was released by the state government recently. It also kicked against the decision of the NURTW over the collection of dues at motor parks, especially at the newly contructed Podo and Temidire motor parks. It took the intervention of the executive members of RTEAN to prevent members of the association who were planning to storm Podo and Temidire motor parks to cause violence. Though, the planned violence was stopped, it seemed the aggrieved members wanted assurance that their demands would be met by the state government as soon as possible. Speaking at the event, the National Coordinator and Patron of the association, Chief Gabriel Adeniyi, disclosed that as the employers and owners of the vehicles at the motor parks, his association had the right to collect the dues in contention. -Nigerian Tribune
