Racial differences are a social construct Id like to ignore. - TopicsExpress

Racial differences are a social construct Id like to ignore. Objectively speaking, Caucasians and African Americans are sisters and brothers under the skin--our DNA is constructed the same, we all want decent shelter and food and water and love within the family and friends and jobs paying wages that make us comfortable. Unfortunately, as Im reminded every day in my work and my personal life, lots of people dont understand the concept of social construct, dont understand that we are brothers and sisters under the skin. So, trying to reside meaningfully in the real world, I look for signs that maybe eventually racial suspicion/hatred will abate. The current issue of The American Prospect magazine offers faint hope in a reported essay by Randall Kennedy, a first-rate scholar who is African American, too. He explains the difference between racial optimists and racial pessimists, both historically and today. He explains why he counts himself a racial optimist without slipping into a Pollyanna mentality, and when we as a society might come closer than we are now to the promised land. prospect.org is the Web site for the magazine. The Fall issue is the one with Kennedys article.
