Random thoughts about Tokyo Fiancee at the TIFF. There is one full-frontal nudity scene and a long-shot of it is in the trailer here (at the onsen): https://youtube/watch?v=fBcY9H8C9Zw&t=1m35s Basically, the movie appears to be largely shot in 4K with some brief up-converted 2k stuff from 3/11. The trailer has been recut with audio from the movie. What you see differs from the movie in context and meaning. The biggest spoiler of this movie is actually the title itself, but it leads to a few good laughs anyway. For a movie shot in Tokyo, there were fewer beautiful Asian women than a typical subway ride in Toronto and I would have to say it seems to be definitely a French movie. Meaning, I guess I give it a G rating in Quebec. 3-stars and a quite a few laugh-track free laughs. Definitely an R rating in Kansas. As for the Lost in Translation aspect: There was only one scene you needed to understand Japanese to know what was wrong with the subtitles. It is the scene where she explains that although born in Japan she is not a Japanese citizen. The subtitles missed the Japanese from the other members of the French Club which was roughly Youre not Japanese, which is tough to translate given all of the context. I heard it as: Youre not [native] Japanese [despite being born here]. Its complicated and irrelevant to the tragicomedy aspect, well it figures in the final scene. Another non-classic ending only TIFF lovers could love, and they did, as I did. Its just a movie. Its an imaginary non-tragic tragicomedy firmly set in reality. :) The absurdity of the final line of the movie makes your head spin, because all along, it was true! [In the OMG, what just happened? sense]
