Rare were the years when Id not actually be working on Christmas - TopicsExpress

Rare were the years when Id not actually be working on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day. Our daughter is grown with an infant daughter of her own now. They live with us, but a 4 m.o. just doesnt express the enthusiasm on Christmas morning that a toddler and small child will in the years to come. We opened gifts yesterday afternoon, finding it more convenient to do it then, than wait for the early hours today. Age, coffee and the other necessities that maturity dictates be accomplished before being exposed to other living beings, crimps the spontaneity of jumping out of bed and heading straight for the hearth to discover what Santa brought. Bright paper on boxes, stockings hung hither and yon and ribbons and bows with instructions in Chinese are scattered throughout the room. They color the day with promises of fun and adventure in the year to come. But there are receipts to be saved, batteries to be installed, and lost gift cards mixed in with the trash to keep us grounded in the realities of what Christmas has come to be, once we have grown enough to play Santa, ourselves. The holidays also bring memories of family and close friends who have departed our lives, but who still cloud these joyous seasons with the grief of their passing. Christmas past are discussed around the kitchen table. Notable moments and gifts revisited too. Then comes the end of the day when company has gone, and we look around at all the things to be put away for next year. At least theres no decorations or special stuff to be done for New Year.
