Rather troubling news from the halls of academia. Back when I was a student at Sydney Uni music department I was occasionally admitted into Winsome Evans magic room - essentially she had a gigantic room wherein shed usher all the students in and seat us all down in a circle and proceed to deliver her wisdom. It was kind of a mini-hall, really. Shed festoon it with banners and posters shed decorated herself and what not; it was also the studio where a lot of the rehearsals of the Renaissance Players took place. I only ever got to see most of the medieval instruments when I attended the odd concert (and they were always odd; a recent description from Crikey describes an instrument at one such concert: It looks for all the world like a wooden umbrella handle and sounds something like a clarion toy trumpet. ) I guess they must have been mostly squirreled away in a box of treasures in a dusty far corner of the room. Now apparently the university has decided to take away all facilities and resources previously allocated to The Renaissance Players and to dismiss their founder and principal. Why? What does this mean, exactly? Are they going to requisition the instruments? The room? Other rehearsal spaces? Do they feel they own the rights to the players (because if so Ive no idea how they hope to keep the band together once theyve dismissed its matriarch). What kind of stupidity is this?
