Recommended reading to understand how the social-historical makings of race and its legacy in the Americas have operated. I highly recommend reading: Vicente Guerrero, Mexicos First Black Indian President by Theodore G. Vincent (2009). A must read to understand interracial and inter ethnic politics in 19th century Mexico; especially if you are interested in understanding the inter mixing of indigenous, black and Filipino experience in Tierra Caliente (aka Costa Chica/Grande) and when colored people began claiming citizenship in America before even the idea of la Mexicanidad. Lots of historical content in this book wrapped around Vicente Guerreros legacy.
