Remember, heaven is not your reward—it’s a free gift. But heaven is where you receive your reward. That’s why we make it our aim to please the Lord in all things. Some object to any teaching that suggests our motivation should come from the thought of receiving a reward. Of course our major reason for pleasing Jesus is that we respond to Him in loving gratitude for all He has done for us. But that’s not all. God promises rewards to those who love Him and seek to please Him. This is the reasoning behind Paul’s words elsewhere in Corinthians. “For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive the things done in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad. Knowing, therefore, the terror of the Lord, we persuade men; but we are well known to God, and I also trust are well known in your consciences.” 2 Corinthians 5:10-11 This is not just a promise of rewards to those who are faithful, but it is also a warning of the awesome seriousness of that day. God is not someone to be trifled with. It will be an extremely fearful thing to stand before the judge of all the earth and give an account of our lives. It will not mean fear of condemnation, or the judgement of eternal condemnation. We have already been justified, declared righteous by faith in Christ. No one can take that away from us—no demon from Hell, not even Satan himself, no power in heaven or on earth. It is God’s full and final verdict upon our lives.
