Reposting because a friend LIKED this and I felt it was a good intro for some curious people into the understanding of what 4th dimensionality can look like. I had to explain 4D in my physics class back in college when I was a freshman in a class of Juniors and Seniors. I was so nervous that I wouldnt be able to explain it well. There wasnt an internet to do the research like the kids have at their fingertips, so you can imagine how much harder it was in the 80s to find info on it. I just want to say that this kid does a great job, but he leaves a question unanswered, and that is TIMEs role. Hes right in saying that TIME is NOT the 4th Dimension. We use TIME to discern one thing from another, dimensionally or in SPACE if you will. Being 3D people, its difficult to go into TIMEs influence on our perception so I will just abbreviate it for now. Think of our understanding of TIME as a movie that we are living and the Reel is just continually running. Since we are in the 3D world, we dont see how Time affects our view of the world. Using the 2D explanation he gives, just think of our 3D world as one frame in the reel that is projected from the 4D world. Our perception of 3D exists because of the 4D worlds projection of us. Said another way and using the example of the shadows, a 3D object in SPACE with one light source casts a 2D version of itself. So then doing the same thing, the 2D without SPACE has only 1 Dimension to move and that is the LINE as the video explains. I was really happy that my professor pushed me so hard to make a 3D model to explain this and in the next post, you will see it explained much better using computer graphics. The model the boy made looks just like the one I came up with and it just made me smile. Well done kid!
