Republic of Trinidad and Tobago International Radio Emergency Support Coalition (IRESC) Special Consultative Status Economic and Social Council United Nations 2012 WOMEN GET SEVEN MONTHS IN JAIL FOR STEALING FOOD TO FEED HER THREE CHILDREN IRESC would like to express its condemnation on the sentence handed down on Michelle Cudjoe by Senior Magistrate Indra Ramoo-Haynes in the San Fernando Magistrates Court. Yes it is a crime but look at the nature of the crime a desperate mother of three children with no food, tears came to my eye, why must we treat our women like this. Why is this country pushing our women to the brink, no food, no work how can one have self-esteem? Where is the father of these children, why are men not living up to their responsibility of fatherhood? Where are all the NGO who fight for the cause of women, this is not right, the police was wrong to bring this matter to the court attention ,government social services should have been called in and other NGO to assist and mediate . The victim Michelle Cudjoe publicly admitted that while exiting a vehicle near her home on Saturday, she snatched the purse. Cudjoe questioned Constable Nanan at Ste Madeleine police station; Cudjoe apologized and handed over the purse with some of the items. She asked the arresting officer to relay her remorse to the victim, this is a food crime a women stealing to feed her children, where is Ms Cudjoe rights to protection by the state as a women who is in need of food to feed her children. IRESC want to know if this is a racist sentence by Senior Magistrate Indra Ramoo-Haynes in the San Fernando Magistrates Court because the accused is of African descent or just plain no understanding and compassion .
