Requiem for a Running club What was once known as the “World’s Largest Running Club” closed its doors yesterday, Saturday, July 19. Despite a dramatic and impassioned battle, the last runner left the building before noon yesterday. Founded in 2002, the Run Club was Nike’s attempt to return to its roots as a company created by runners for runners. It succeeded dramatically. From humble beginnings serving a handful of runners it became a vibrant community that could count hundreds of active New York City runners amongst its ranks, vastly exceeding the size of any other local club. By the time of its passing in 2014, it had served tens of thousands of runners from all over world and all continents except Antarctica. Although known for its warm and welcoming atmosphere, the Run Club’s relaxed environment produced dedicated and outstanding runners, competing in marathons across the world and setting personal records. It had been known to change lives. The key to the unparalleled success of the Run Club were the dedicated pacers, often spotted in Central Park leading dozens in their bright yellow dry fit shirts. A combination of coach and mobile bartender, the pacers catered to all sizes and speeds, all ages and creeds and in all weather conditions. They went above and beyond what could be rightfully expected and they will truly be missed. The Run Club leaves behind a legacy of enduring friendships and deep loyalty. It is expected that this legacy will last for years to come. In lieu of sadness, the members of the club would prefer that you persevere, keep up your marathon training, commit to your goals and choose love over hate.
