Review: Aladdin @ Oldham Coliseum Believe it or not but panto season is here again – oh yes it is – and what better way to kick it off than with one of the old favourites. I say old, as the first stage version of Aladdin was seen in London’s Covent Garden Theatre in 1788. Much has changed since then and the soundtrack blasting out from Oldham Coliseum – including the likes of Pharrell Williams’ Happy and Meghan Trainor’s All About That Bass – brought it smack bang up to date. There have been various versions of the story too and thankfully the Coliseum’s version is the most familiar – minus the monkey and with the added hilarity of Widow Twankey and his many comical costumes. Twankey, played by Fine Time Fontayne, is fresh from the set of Coronation Street where he has been starring as Peter Barlow’s cell mate. That goes some way to explaining his level of lunacy and from the very beginning – with him dressed as what looked like a giant bowl of chicken chow mein and telling poor Dawn in the audience that she looked ‘like a box of frogs’ – it was clear we were in for a fun [...] manchesterinnews/review-aladdin-oldham-coliseum/
