Richard Boyd Barrett TD from People Before Profit will be speaking in Clonmel on 22nd September at 8pm in Hearne’s Hotel, Parnell Street. In a statement, Boyd Barrett said, ‘We are involved in a major campaign of resistance to the water charges. These will start at over €170 a year per person (if availing of both incoming and outgoing water- according to an Irish Water spokesperson ) and then rise progressively after that. In Britain average water charges come in at over £500 a year per household – and we can expect them to rise to that in Ireland. ‘The government claims that the charges are necessary for conservation and for investment in the infrastructure. But they are lying on both counts. 41 percent of the water leaks out through the pipes. If the €1 billion that will be invested in meters were used to fix these pipes, we could save a vast quantity of water. Nor will the charges lead to any substantial increase in investment because the government is reducing the level of its own funding to the water infrastructure. It is simply a case of double taxation while our taxes are diverted to the payment folk bondholders’ Anne Condon from the local Clonmel Branch of People Before Profit said, “The meeting will also discuss the wider fight against alternative. We need a national political alternative in this country that challenges the failed policy of austerity. People Before Profit is a growing political force. We invite local residents to come to this meeting and heard what is on offer by way of alternatives.
