Righto - I had an awful incident in which our diagnosis was maligned and cancelled out and we were told that the person who diagnosed us was not qualified to do so (she knew nothing about him).....I was told it was illegal for anyone except a psychiatrist to diagnose. So I contacted the sweet and gentle man who diagnosed us to ask if he would share his qualifications......not only is he literally doubly qualified to diagnose - he TEACHES people the qualification to do so. For those who are wondering or are interested: Ladies and gentlemen...the humble and oh so qualified...Garth Smith: Dear .......... I am sorry to hear that you have had a run in with a Psychologist who told you I am not qualified to diagnose Aspergers. For your information my qualifications are as follows: Bachelor of Science (Physiology major) (BSc) Bachelor of Medicine Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) Post Graduate Diploma in Child Health (DCH) Post Graduate Diploma in Obstetrics (Dip Obs) Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP) I also have a handful of other qualifications that relate to my work as a Consultant Paediatrician, and Developmental Paediatrician, most notable in regard to the diagnosis of Autism is the qualification in the Griffiths Mental development scales, which I also teach, and I am qualified in the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule - 2 (a qualification usually reserved for psychologists, but also used by Specialists like myself). I am a senior lecturer at the University of Otago and an Honorary Senior lecturer at Victoria University. I have sufficient qualifications to be considered an expert in this field. The comment about legality seems to reflect a lack of understanding and probably a degree of insecurity about this spectrum of developmental disorders/differences.
