View our archive specials here: oberondesign/journal-covers/archive-specials.html Buffalo Bill Cody created the first major rodeo show, occurring alongside the Wild West show. Women joined the rodeo competitions in the 1890’s and the first woman bulldogger appeared in the form of one Tillie Baldwin in 1913. At the same time the animal welfare groups began targeting rodeo’s as cruel to animals. In 1929 a superstar cowgirl named Bonnie McCarroll died in a bronc riding accident and women were officially dropped from the Rodeo Association of America, making it an all-male entity. Though women still participated in lesser venues they struggled for equal pay and prize money until 1998 when all rodeo participants were granted equal pay.
