Round Up Time Part II The cattle are placed in holding pens for sorting. Calves are sorted off into one holding pen and the momma cows are turned lose, to wait for their babies. When the sorting is done the fun begins. The branding irons are placed in a fire and heated to a glowing red. The cowboys mount their steeds and start to swing their ropes. One by one the calves are roped by the back legs and drug to the fire. The ground crews flank the claves, “hold’em strong boys for the branding iron is near!” You know there is nothing like the smell of burning hide, sweat, manure and a wet horse. To a cowboy it is the perfume that won the west. The calf receives the mark of its owner, shot for black leg, the ear is marked, and the little bulls become steers. I don’t know why or how, but it became my job to cut these bulls. It must in connection with the sacrifices of the priests in the Old Testament. But I swear, I have never offered a little bull as a sacrifice. The worst, I think, I have done is to cut a bull with a dull knife. I have been known to shout out to the cowboys, “bring that sinner to my altar.” Now come to think of it, the calf isn’t the only one that receives the mark of its owner. When a sinner submits their life to Christ Jesus, the Holy Spirit comes into that person’s life. The Holy Spirit then brands us for Jesus, with the Master’s mark.
