Roy Hodgsons pre-match comments inspired me, says Suarez It wasnt revenge but in England they talked about the injury and the coach had words that annoyed me, Suarez said. “It was one of the best games I’ve played. It’s an amazing moment for me. “Maybe a few days ago I thought this wouldn’t be possible. Before the game too many people in England laughed about my attitude over the last few years. “This is a very good time for me. I want to see what they think now.” Kop legend Robbie Fowler says Hodgson was foolish to question Suarezs credentials after a season when he plundered 31 Premier League goals and was crowned Player of the Year. It was ridiculous for him to say Suarez is not world class. There was no need to say that,” Fowler said. “Have Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo performed at a World Cup? No, they haven’t. They are still world class though. That statement will have driven him and the whole Uruguay team on.” Suarez dedicated his goals to Uruguay physio Walter Ferreira, who he credits for helping him make a rapid recovery from knee surgery last month. “My wife and my two children are important to me and Walter is also important, the goals were for him because of what he did for me,” Suarez said. “I have to thank him. I scored the goals but he is the man responsible for them. “I was probably only 50% fit but it is due to the work of all the fantastic doctors and physiotherapist that I was able to be 50% ready and I am thankful that that was enough to beat England. “I have some more days to get ready for the next game now and the more I train the sharper and more ready I will be.” An emotional Suarez was held aloft by his team-mates after the final whistle but he soon made a beeline for Reds clubmate Steven Gerrard. The winning goal came from a long punt down field which Gerrard inadvertently flicked into Suarezs path and the Uruguayan went to console his good friend. “I told him to keep going,” Suarez said. “He’s the best player I’ve played with on the pitch. “This is an unlucky moment for him. I don’t like it when he hurts like this. I said keep going, forget this game, you’re one of the best’.” With Costa Rica top of the group with six points, Oscar Tabarezs Uruguay must beat Italy in their final game on Tuesday in order to progress to the last 16. “This victory was very important. It was a difficult match against a difficult rival. England are a strong team. But we have not qualified, we have to keep our feet on the ground,” Suarez said. “We need to make sure we go and get the right result against Italy. Then if we progress out of the group we can start to dream about what is possible.”
