SAN MIGUEL BEER WHIPS GLOBALPORT The San Miguel Beermen won’t let the past haunt them. With former SMB cog Jay Washington scoring 12 points in the first half and Alex Cabagnot stabilizing the ship on the other end, GlobalPort kept the game close for the first two quarters, 47-42. But the second half was a different story altogether. Leaning behind All-Stars June Mar Fajardo, Arwind Santos, and Marcio Lassiter, the Beermen found their stride in the third quarter and scored a 109-92 win over GlobalPort in the 2014 PLDT Home TVolution PBA Commissioner’s Cup Monday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum. The 17-point battery of GlobalPort was the third straight victory for San Miguel, and its fifth win in six outings. Import Kevin Jones had a double-double of 30 points and 19 rebounds as he led the Beermen’s attack which saw five other players crack double digits. Santos also had his own 18 points and 10 boards, while Lassiter chipped in 16, as Chris Ross also logged a double-double with 11 markers and 11 assists. Fajardo had eight of his 11 points in the third, while Sol Mercado contributed 10. Despite the win, San Miguel Beer team consultant Todd Purves said that they are still running hurt, telling the media in the post-game press conference, “There’s no way we’re near 100 percent yet.” “I still have a couple of guys fighting through injuries and gutting it out. I appreciate it. We’ve got one more game before we get a bit of a break and hopefully, we’ll get some bodies healed on that break. But in the meantime, I’m proud of the guys that are fighting through it and are contributing,” said Purves, who had Fajardo and Mercado coming from its sick bay, and Chico Lanete who didn’t see action for the day. San Miguel stepped on the gas all game long as it nailed 27 points on fastbreaks, compared to only eight for GlobalPort. Washington led GlobalPort with 22 points, as the Batang Pier fell to 0-6. Import Evan Brock had a double-double of 20 points and 16 boards, as rookie RR Garcia chimed in 17 markers, eight of those coming in a stretch in the fourth where GlobalPort nipped San Miguel’s lead to only seven points. pba.inquirer.net/43282/san-miguel-beer-whips-globalport?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter
