SCAM ALERT ON OLX (SULIT). SHARE IF YOU FEEL APPROPRIATE Maybe its because I have an eye for scams. Or maybe its just that I browse so much that I can tell when something is off. This is a scam I found on Sulit (OLX) that involves high end cars and ridiculously low prices. Ok to start, lets acknowledge that if it sounds too good to be true then it probably is. That said theres no harm in trying to find a good deal. The trick is not to get sucked in by the scam. In these two cases, the items for sale were highly collectible cars that were selling at peso prices which should have been their dollar prices. The first was a 427 Mustang fastback and the second was a 80s Testarossa. While I was sure these were either typos or Phishing expeditions for you email and other details I still went on to see where the conversation would lead. Bottom line BOTH respondents (one male the other female) had similar stories. The cars both abroad in storage, in perfect condition. Both suffered from divorces (painful) and both were looking to dispose of the cars quickly which explained the low price. For me, even with the red flags, it was both a temptation to even see one of these cars let alone buy one. But a few cautious emails later and a pattern emerged that didnt seem right. Heres the email from the MUSTANG SELLER Thank you for your interest in my car. I bought this car when I was living with my ex-wife in Manila. The car is located now in London UK sealed with all documents in the transport company container. It was a painful divorce for me, but at least I got my kids. Now I returned with them to my hometown in London UK. I wanted to keep the car, but my younger kid cries every time he sees it so I want to sell it as fast as I can, to end this chapter of our lives. I tried to sell it here but nobody is interested because it is too difficult to drive here, taxes to register it in the UK so I decided to try to sell it back there . I already found a reputable delivery company specialized in this kind of transaction and they can take care of everything for me ( including the car registration on your name ). The delivery taxes will be paid by me. Thank you and hope to hear from you , Heres the email from the TESTAROSSA SELLER Hi, The car is still available, with the last service two months ago, very good condition, no accidents events, no scratches or dents, log book and with all the necessary documents to make the sale. I am originally from Spain and I had a work contract in Philippines , but recently my work contract has ended and also I recently got a divorce after I found out that for the past 3 years my ex-husband had an affair with another woman . I have moved back to Spain where it is a quite hard and expensive to register or ride the car. The car still have filipino documents and comes with full service history and all taxes payed, for additional specifications feel free to let me know. Thank you , From this point I stopped the conversation via email as Im sure it would have led to some type of downpayment and other transactions. Besides the responses had spooked me enough already. I found these scams in the AUTOMOTIVES SECTION but there should be no reason why the same tactic will be used in other high end items. So Im not posting the identities of the emailers just in case its legit. But I am warning you about the similarities of the emails. Add that to the buyers adage that if its too good to be true then it probably is, then what you have is a run away and fast situation. Im sure Bit knows of this already but just in case there are others out ther who dont. Fair warning. Please share if appropriate.
