SCMP: 北京告訴英國它沒有香港 “道德責任” Beijing tells Britain it has no ‘moral responsibility’ for Hong Kong 中國說,在香港訪問英國的禁令投訴是無用 China says British complaints over Hong Kong visit ban are ‘useless’ China told Britain on Wednesday that it had no moral responsibility for what happens in Hong Kong since its return to China, as the two countries continued to argue about Beijing’s ban on a group of British members of parliament visiting the city. Chinese Foreign Ministry Hua Chunying, asked to comment on whether Britain still had any responsibility for Hong Kong as a signatory to the agreement to hand it back to China, said that was not the case. “Britain has no sovereignty over a Hong Kong that has returned to China, no authority and no right to oversight. There is no such thing as a moral responsibility,” she told a daily news briefing in Beijing. “The real aim of a small minority of British people trying to use so-called moral responsibility to obscure the facts is to interfere in China’s internal affairs. Such an attempt cannot succeed, and is something China certainly cannot accept.” On Tuesday, China rebuffed as “useless” complaints from British Prime Minister David Cameron about a ban on a group of UK lawmakers visiting Hong Kong, saying the former colonial power would reap what it sowed. The British parliament held a three-hour emergency debate over the ban on Tuesday, with lawmakers warning it would damage relations between London and Beijing. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said Beijing was responsible for Hong Kong’s foreign affairs and it alone could decide who to allow in, reacting to Cameron’s comments. “If certain people in Britain still want to keep on like this, it is not only irrational and useless but like lifting up a rock to drop it on one’s foot,” she said, using an expression meaning to reap what one has sowed. weidb/p10237
