Tewodros was never committed suicide, but killed by braviest Oromo fighters led by queen Workitu, the then Wollo oromos leader. Amhara poem confirms this fact as follows (Mqdala afafu lai chuhet berekete ye setwan anawkim wond and sew mote). That setwan was Workitu. Given the bloodiest fighting, the writer had no idea about that womans condition, but for sure he knew that Tewodros was dead. Plesae guys, do not hide fact. Background Information: When Theodore in 1856 conquered Shoa, the Showan Prince Ailu, unable to contend against the invader, entrusted Menelik, his only son, at the time about 10 years old, to the care of his most faithful followers. In spite of their desperate resistance young Menelik was captured, and compelled to go to the imperial court ; but Theodore seems to have taken a fancy to the boy, for during ten years of captivity he treated him well, and gave him the title of Dejazmatch. Finally, in 1865, Menelik, now 21 years of age, escaped and sought refuge with Workitu, Queen of the Wollo Oromos, determined at all costs to recover his inheritance in Shoa. Now Queen Workitu had been compelled to give her son as hostage to Theodore ; so no sooner did the Emperor hear that Menelik was at her Court than he sent her the following iconic message: Either you protect Menelik and your son will be executed, or else you give up Menelik and your son will be restored to you. The old men, her advisers strongly urged her to surrender Menelik, firstly in order to save her sons life, secondly in order to save her own throne; but, contrary to all expectation, this brave woman firmly refused to do so. If I follow your advice, she said, it would mean two victims, both my son and Menelik; now God designs that one of the two shall be saved. She therefore sent Menelik to Shoa under a strong escort, and Theodore had her son executed; this was the first of the three great occations on which Meneliks life was preserved in an almost miraculous manner. The Nineteenth century and after: v. 53 Mqdala afafu lai chuhet berekete ye setwan anawkim wond and sew mote ============================================================= When Menelik escaped from Mekdela he traveled back to Showa, passing through Wollo. It was there that the ruler of Wollo, Queen Workitu, had captured and held him prisoner for a short while. Her son, the young Alemayehu, was also held prisoner by Tewodros in Mekdela. Workitu wanted to negotiate the release of her son in exchange for handing over Menelik. Tewodros, however, saw that as a veiled threat to his authority and blackmail. The threat was realized as Tewodros used the sheer cliffs of Mekdela for another sinister purpose: to have Alemayehu executed and his body thrown off the cliffs. Workitu was heartbroken and released Menelik to proceed on his journey. Once at home, Menelik became a rebel, declaring himself King of Showa and inheritor of his father, Haile-Melekots, kingdom
