SHOOTERS SUPPORT FARMERS Tuesday, September 3rd, 2013 By Louise Nichols The Singleton Argus MEMBERS of the Shooters and Fishers Party travelled to Bulga last Friday to inspect for themselves the site of the proposed Mount Thorley Warkworth coal mine expansion. And having seen the site and spoken to members of the Bulga Milbrodale Progress Association about its impact on their community the visitors were united in their opposition to the expansion being given the green light. “We don’t believe the government should have supported the Supreme Court appeal by the mine’s owners Coal &Allied,” said Robert Borsak, Shooters and Fishers Party, member of the NSW Legislative Council. “I am not anti coal mining but it was a deed agreement for the mine under its previous development consent not to go onto land it now wants to develop. “It is not right for that deed of agreement to be totally ignored. “Why should we continually see so many small communities disappearing under mine expansions so therefore we are supporting the Bulga Milbrodale Association.” Mr Borsak said there was too much destruction of agricultural land in the state. Adding that if it continued at the current pace Australia would become a food importer something strongly opposed by the Shooters and Fishers Party. “How can we feed a metropolis the size of Sydney if we don’t protect our agricultural sector,” Mr Borsak said. He was also very critical of the government’s proposed amendments to the State Environmental Planning Policy (SEPP) Resource Significance. He said the amendments were not warranted under any circumstances. Putting economic considerations above all else was dangerous, he argued. “We will oppose the amendments to the legislation in the NSW Upper House and we have the numbers to stop the changes,” he said. “I do not trust the Premier Barry O’Farrell and nor should the residents of the Hunter Valley. “The Liberals and their coalition partners the Nationals promised so much before the last state election and they have completely failed to deliver on those promises.” Mr Borsak was scathing in his assessment of the current state government warning that at the next state election should they gain power of both houses their power would be unfettered. “The only way to protect the Hunter and all the small communities is to ensure the current government does not gain full control of both houses of parliament,” he said. “At least now there is review of legislation.” singletonargus.au/story/1747443/shooters-support-farmers/?cs=1534
