SIMONNE & THE DARK STARS: Saturday, 26th October 2013 The Mesmerist, Brighton Sinister Simonne and her terrifyingly Dark Stars ensorcelled the Mesmerist at the Halloween weekend party. They had already played an twilight gig at the Pav Tav, but the gremlins hit the sound early here, with Simonnes crooning reduced to a deathly whisper haunting the rafters. It took a good 10 minutes for the Soundfinder General to trace the demons among the tangle of possessed jackplugs in the depths. The sound was near-perfect after the break, an achievement under the low ceiling that usually sandwiches more acoustic bands, but was stretched by interring the wide sound of the Dark Stars. In keeping with the thriller atmosphere of Halloween, the Dark Stars are the only band we have seen that features a saw, howling a tomenting seasonal theme, though thankfully the occasion stopped short of re-enacting the macabre film sequence of the same name. Simonnes style jumped back and forth across a range of genres like a firecracker let off 10 days early. This is definitely mature music with a soupcon of cabaret, helped on this night by a burlesque of poledancing during the break and in the after-party. The base is very blues and three-bar, but Simonne has classic jazz strains to her voice and the saw adds an epic coat of psychedelia and seasonal . Her appeal was mirrored in the eclectic, cross generation mix of the crowd, some swaying thoughtfully to the slower, bewitching numbers, others dancing devilishly to the faster, spirited material. Band profiles lost the band somewhere in the after-party, unapologetically distracted from getting their take on what had passed by the cabaret and dancing, an atmosphere incanted by the music.
