SKIP CHRISTMAS PARTY IN GOVT OFFICES Castelo suggests pre-Christmas act of charity In the aftermath of the human tragedy wreaked by super-typhoon Yolanda, Rep. Winston “Winnie” Castelo, Chair of the Committee on Metro Manila Development today came up with the suggestion of a waiver of Christmas parties that are traditionally held even in various government offices and instead proposes pooling all the costs in holding one such Christmas party as well as the supposedly gifts prepared by each government employee for their ‘exchange gifts’ portion of the Christmas affair. “As many as there are offices in a single line department alone, each of these offices normally holds its own Christmas party. Why don’t we instead pool the intended costs for such and come up with a more than generous aggregate amount of funds including what would otherwise be the intended costs of gifts into a fund-raising project?”, Castelo said. According to the committee chair, there will be sizeable amount of ready cash as well as maybe early Christmas gifts that can be collected for the victims of the latest human tragedy in the Visayas. Apparently, Castelo has organized a similar activity in his district office that is directly managed by his constituents who are from Leyte or parts of the Visayas badly hit by super-typhoon Yolanda and then they are the very one who fly to Tacloban to bring and distribute the relief goods collected on board a C130 plane. “My proposal carries its clear multiplier effect in that there are about 1.5 million government employees in the government bureaucracy and if we are able to tap on their sense of charity and generosity, then we can achieve a truly sizeable amount of financial resources and pre-Christmas gift items for each and every individual victim of super-typhoon Yolanda”, Castelo added. “I had in mind coordinating with the Chairman of the Civil Service Commission to perhaps issue an advisory to this effect if only to effectively streamline this noble project that identifies government employees as itself a sector of society ready to help when public service so requires if only to alleviate the plight of those in need and badly situated in these trying times”, Castelo pointed out.
