SLS Students Mark Human Rights Day Students of Sadeeqa’s Learning System (SLS) Montessori & High School, Satellite Town Senior Campus, celebrated Human Rights Day this week. The chief guest for the event was Shaista Shahid who has been in the field of education for the past 30 years, and is the person responsible for developing the curriculum on Human Rights for the Ministry of Education. The event began with the recitation and translation of some verses of ‘Surah Al-An’am’ that beautifully emphasised good treatment to parents, to not kill offspring out of poverty and the rights of animals. The audience was then given the definition and explanation of what Human Rights Day stood for and how it came into being. For the next hour, students presented short skits, heart wrenching poems and passionate speeches highlighting the transgression of human rights in our day to day life in Pakistan. The issues the students and teachers chose to bring to light were those that hit close to home, happenings that we as a society overlook or prefer to sweep under the rug. Students portrayed gender inequality practiced by parents between siblings growing up in the same home. They showed how child servants are treated and how they are rarely given a chance to get an education. They discouraged parents from hiring underage help and to boycott businesses that employ underage help. The rights of religious minorities were stressed in a beautiful skit showing how we are all humans above anything else. The rights of children and the rights of the elderly were also underscored. As the parents and guests gathered to have tea, 150 students who had prepared placards highlighting human rights issues close to their hearts silently marched out of the school on the road to bring awareness to the public about the day. As cars and motorbikes stopped to ask students what politics the students were marching for, the students proudly told them they were marching for no political right but basic human rights.
