SOUTH EAST STUDENTS CONFER LIFE PATRON AWARD ON UWAJUMOGU The Speaker, Imo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Uwajumogu, has been bestowed with the prestigious life patron award, by the National Association of South East Students. The Students who besieged the state Assembly complex, Wednesday in their large numbers, rolled out the drums in appreciation of what they described as “the unassuming leadership role” the Speaker has carved for himself since the inception of the present administration in the state. The award, according to the student’s Vice President, Comr. Raphael Ezeala, was initiated to reward and encourage Rt. Hon. Uwajumogu, for being the students friendly Speaker in the entire states of the South East zone, while urging other politicians in the zone to emulate the sterling qualities of the Speaker in becoming a role model for the youths who are considered the leaders of tomorrow. The Students also, pointed out that the Imo House of Assembly led by the Speaker has engraved its name in the minds of the students, as well as the upcoming citizens of the state for being the first state Assembly Speaker to spearhead the enactment of the law establishing free and qualitative education policy of the state government, which is being enjoyed by all citizens at the various levels of education in the state. According to them, such policy has resulted to a paradigm shift in the overall development of the state, adding that capacity building has remained the best platform for creating a sustainable development for the leaders of tomorrow. They used the forum to endorse the senatorial ambition of the Speaker to represent the people of Okigwe senatorial zone at the National Assembly in the forthcoming polls, adding that the Uwajumogu candidacy was a sure bet for improved welfare, as well as the overall human capital development for the teeming youths of the zone and by extension, the state. The South East students further, appreciated the doggedness of the Speaker in giving the ultra modern state Assembly complex a facelift, stressing that the current Imo state House of Assembly, in its resolve to pursue vigorously, people-oriented policies and programmes, has remained the best the state has witnessed since the return of the country’s democracy, hence its recent award as the most proactive House in the East of the Niger. The Speaker, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Uwajumogu, had while receiving the award described the youths as the indispensable social elements which any government cannot relegate to the background in its policy formulation, adding that it was in recognition of their importance that the state government has mapped out viable policies and programmes to accord them the necessary sense of belonging. He assured them that the state House of Assembly, would continue to accord bills and motions which are targeted at the best interest of the youths a serious priority, maintaining that the great feats achieved so far by the state government in the areas of empowerments and human capital development have continued to achieve the desired results. The Speaker, while thanking the students for their support to his political career, also enjoined them to always remain patriotic as the journey to 2015 elections commence, urging them to shun acts such as, political thuggery and other social vices which according to him, are considered inimical to the growth and development of our nascent democracy.
