SPEECH BY H.E. MARGARET KENYATTA DURING THE LAYING OF THE FOUNDATION STONE FOR THE MEDICAL PRACTITIONERS AND DENTISTS BOARD OFFICE COMPLEX ON 13TH NOVEMBER, 2014 Distinguished Guests, Ladies and Gentlemen, It gives me great pleasure to join you this morning to lay the foundation stone for the Medical Practitioners and Dentists Board Office Complex. This occasion is the culmination of a dream long held by the Board to own a Building. The Board has been operating from a converted residential house which is a less than an ideal situation for a public body of this stature. I am aware that the mandate of this Board is to regulate the training, registration, licensing and the practice of Medicine and Dentistry as well as Health Institutions in the country. The completion of this office complex will ensure that the Board will no longer be forced to seek borrowed space from the University of Nairobi. I am informed that majority of cases of medical negligence lodged and determined by this Board in the last 5 years are related to maternal mortality and child health, an issue that is very close to my heart. I take this opportunity to challenge all healthcare workers to carry out their duties with devotion and professionalism in accordance with the National Patient’s Rights Charter that was launched by the Ministry of Health in December 2013. A diligent professional workforce that adheres to ethics is critical to our country. We want Kenyans to attend public health Institutions with confidence that they shall be in safe hands and that they will leave the facilities alive and well. I live for the day when our leaders and the elite shall feel proud to be admitted in our public hospitals for treatment instead of seeking medical services abroad. I am aware that the Ministry of Health is working hard to ensure that our hospitals become everyone’s first choice by providing the requisite human resource, infrastructure and medical equipment. I encourage you to keep up the good work. The Government is committed to implementing the dictates of our constitution promulgated in 2010. This document is not just a paper to be shelved and casually referred to: It embodies the will of Kenyans. Their desire is to live in a secure, clean environment where democracy and human rights are respected and accorded to all. The Bill of Rights is one that our people hold dear and the Government is determined to see to it that Kenyans aspirations and rights are safeguarded. Nowhere is this right more cherished than in matters of Health. Therefore, the right to access quality healthcare cannot be over emphasized. This can only be possible by ensuring that all medical practitioners conduct themselves with utmost professionalism and that all health facilities are up to standard. I urge the Cabinet Secretary of the Ministry of Health to continue giving the Board the necessary technical and logistical support towards the realization of this important goal. In conclusion, I commend the Chairman and Members of this Board as well as the Secretariat for mobilizing funds from internal savings towards the construction of this Complex which will provide the much needed office space. I wish you the very best as you progress in the construction work, and look forward to joining you as we celebrate its completion. Thank you.
