STATEMENT BY Cllr Jim McGarry Labour Candidate for 2014 Local Elections Tuesday, 11th March 2014 GREEN LIGHT FOR NEW €1.8M HOUSING CONSTRUCTION AT FR FLANAGAN TERRACE – MCGARRY Local election candidate and sitting Councillor, Jim McGarry has received confirmation from Minister for Housing, Jan O’Sullivan, of construction of 12 new local authority housing units at Fr Flanagan Terrace. The news comes as part of a €68million programme of house building announced by Minister O’Sullivan today. “I strongly welcome the funding for the development of these sites. There is a strong social housing need in Sligo which I witness everyday in my constituency office, and while this announcement is relatively modest, it sends a strong signal that Labour in government is pressing ahead with local authority house building. “Whereas previous housing announcements in the past few years have been targeted at special housing needs, such the elderly or people with a disability, this funding is the first new programme of mainstream local authority construction since the recession struck. It will also have jobs dividends, as projects such as this one at Fr. Flanagan Terrace provide employment for construction workers. It is one of the great tragedies of the recession that so many skilled able bodied young men who worked in construction and were extremely busy now find themselves unemployed. I’ve seen the devastation this has caused to this particular group of workers and I feel that this is a positive start by the Government to try and address this issue. “I commend Minister O’Sullivan for sourcing the funding to enable these projects to go ahead, and I look forward to seeing work start on building of new homes for local families.
