SUNDAY’S FUN FACT “Every day you should reach out and touch someone. People love a warm hug, or just a friendly pat on the back.” ~Maya Angelou Hugging is a ritual that has been around for a long time. The exact origin of this gesture is unclear, but some believe that were born with the knowledge and desire to hug our loved ones. Hugs make us feel good and they are good for us, too!!! Hugging is healthy! The act of embracing floods our bodies with oxytocin, a bonding hormone that makes people feel secure and trusting toward each other, it lowers cortisol (stress hormone) levels, and reduces stress. People who have higher amounts of hugs have also have higher levels of oxytocin and lower blood pressure and heart rates, according to research done at the University of North Carolina. In addition, researchers at the University of Wisconsin at Madison tested that a hug from anyone youre close to works extra well. When they analyzed stress levels among volunteers giving a presentation, participants who got hugs from their moms afterward saw decreases in cortisol levels an hour after the presentation. June 29th is a special day; it is Hug Holiday Day! This day was created by the “Hugs for Health Foundation.” It encourages us to give hugs to those in need, especially focusing on the elderly, sick, lonely, and anyone who can use some warmth and cheer. Remember, “a hug is a great gift - one size fits all, and its easy to exchange.” ~Author Unknown Hugs. They can make us happier AND healthier. Peace, love, and HUGS!! ;) ~ptfb team
