Sadaqatul Fitr 1435 AH – 2014 Hanafi: R19.00 per person Shafi’î: R24.00 per person Ibn Abbas radhi-allâhu ‘anhu narrates that Rasulullâh sallallâhu ‘alayhi wasallam has made obligatory Sadaqatul Fitr as a means of cleansing the fasts from idle and lewd talk and in order that it provides food for the poor and destitute. (Abû Dawûd) Timely payment of Fitra facilitates distribution before Eid in accordance with the Sunnah. Sadaqatul Fitr becomes obligatory upon a Muslim male and female: Points to remember: * Who is alive at dawn on the day of Eid-ul-Fitr. * On Whom Zakaat is Wajib, or who possesses goods free of debt in excess of his personal needs (e.g. house, clothing, furniture, etc.) to the value upon which Zakaat is obligatory. * On the father, on behalf of his minor children. * It is essential that Sadaqatul Fitr be distributed to the poor and needy Muslim before the Eid Salaah. However, if this obligation has not been discharged timeously it should be done as soon as possible. * It is preferable to give one’s Sadaqatul Fitr firstly to needy relatives, thereafter to one’s needy neighbours and then to other needy Muslims. Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said, “ The fast remains suspended between the heavens and the earth until fitrah is discharged.” (Targheeb) The amounts of fitrah stated above is for South Africa only. Please consult you local masjid or Islamic centre for the fitrah amounts in your city or region.
