Safety in Your Car...Tips from AWSDA (American Womens Self Defense Association) for all of us, women and men! You know all about the safety tips you should be following, but are still guilty of becoming complacent once in a while. We get distracted, were thinking about something else, maybe were angry or upset about something. Almost all of us drive, and some of us travel a lot, so lets do a refresher on how to stay safe in your vehicle! As youre approaching your vehicle, glance underneath to ensure theres no one hiding. Personally I would never crawl around on the ground, shimmy underneath someones car, and wait for their return in hopes of grabbing them. But people do it, so LOOK! Walk to your car in a confident, assertive manner. Your confidence should be boosted by the fact that you surely parked in a populated, well-lit area! And have those keys in hand and ready! Glance into the backseat before getting into the car. At the last AWSDA Summit in September, one of the live action scenarios involved the victim being approached near his car by another person. Naturally his attention was focused on the person who had approached him, and he failed to check the backseat before getting in. Guess where the real assailant was... When youre dropping someone off, always make sure that you watch to make sure they get into the house or their destination safely. If you feel like youre being followed, drive to a police station or a well-lit service station. Dont be shy about honking for attention. If you think youre being followed, definitely do NOT drive to your house. Be smart and stay safe!
