Saturday, October 11th: Began the day bright and early in Flemingsburg as the Court Day vendors were setting up. Next stop was the Eagles Lodge in Maysville for a breakfast and auction benefit for Doug Conrad. The event was well attended, and the Eagles compassion was evident. From there, to Bracken County, where we visited Jims Auto for their annual customer appreciation day luncheon, another amazingly well-attended event. Just over the hill, Augusta was celebrating with yet another of its fine series of festivals: The Turning of the Leaves. The cold, damp morning gave way to a brief period of warming sunlight, which truly gave the event a crisp, autumn flare which gave the event just the right atmosphere. At this point, Barb and I split up. As she resumed her own door-to-dor campaign (for which I am truly grateful...there are SO many doors!), I returned to Fleming County for another pass through the Court Day crowd, before heading to the Mount Carmel Volunteer Fire Department annual fundraising dinner. Those guys have this down, having designed the Firehouse perfectly for getting freshly smoked and grilled meats quickly from their outdoor incredible double-entry smoker/grill, through a specially designed window, passing everything directly to the long line of hungry contributors, many of which cheerfully contributed to to a long lineup of donated items. The entire event hopefully brought the Volunteers a good deal of funds to help them continue their valuable services to the community. I would add a word of thanks to all who volunteer for community service in any capacity. I cant stress enough how rewarding it can be to give back even just a modest portion of your time and efforts to your own community, or even surrounding ones. Such service and involvement keep neighbors better connected in this modern world of primarily electronic communication. I firmly believe that attendance at interpersonal gatherings, whether it be at church, festivals, social organizations, public service, or political events helps bring solidarity to a community, and brings everyone closer together. Get away from your televisions, computers, tablets, phones...get out of the house once in a while and take notice of, or better yet take part in, things that are going on around you. I guarantee it will not only enrichen your life, but will enrichen the lives of others as well.
