Saturday’s big win at Everton showed why this Chelsea squad are more equipped to overcome challenges during a game than last season according to John Terry. The skipper spoke after a 100 per cent record in August was sealed by the 6-3 victory, a performance he dedicated to Lord Attenborough, our Life President whose passing last weekend was marked by the players wearing black armbands in this game. Not since a Gordon Davies hat-trick in 1984 helped overcome the eventual champions that season have Chelsea goals flowed so readily at Goodison. The six scored yesterday beat the four in a 4-3 win on that December day and is our largest haul away to Everton. Our previous biggest league wins there were two 3-0s. An otherwise delighted Terry acknowledged the team’s defending had at times fallen below its usual standard, but against tough opponents a win was always on the cards from the moment Branislav Ivanovic added a rapid second goal to Diego Costa’s first-minute opener. ‘Defensively we might get a bit of a telling off from the manager but when we have that firepower up front and in midfield it is excellent,’ the captain said. ‘After going 2-0 up so early it was disappointing to give away a goal, especially just before half-time. We got a wake-up call and it probably served us well in the second half, maybe we were too relaxed in the first half, but the way we kept responding was excellent and is something we didn’t have last year. ‘We have not done so well at Goodison Park the last few years so to get the win in the manner in which we did it was incredible, and a great performance from the whole team.’ Optimism for a strong league title challenge has been boosted by the way Diego Costa has hit the ground running at the start of his Premier League career. He shrugged off his midweek injury concern to make it four goals from three games. ‘When you see him every day, he has everything and he has got off to a flying start with us and long may it continue,’ said Terry. ‘Didier [Drogba] spoke before the game and said it has been too long since we won the league. That is our aim at the start of the season and it was vital we got this win. I’d like to dedicate it to Lord Attenborough on behalf of myself and everyone at Chelsea.’
