Saw two fine 2013 films: Prisoners is a terrific, engrossing (if too long) thriller that plays like a cross between Mystic River and Girl with Dragon Tattoo. Hugh Jackman and Jake Gylenhall are fine in the leads, and the story holds your attention until the great last scene. Three torture scenes. Mud is a wonderful southern drama that plays like a cross between Stand By Me and Sling Blade. Great Southern scenery and music, with a terrific performance from Matthew McConaughey (who does manage to take his shirt off a few times, natch). An engaging coming of age story that is involving the whole way thru. Three and a half houseboats.
