Scarcely does a day pass without some bewildered person saying to me Life shouldnt be this difficult. The occasion for that statement are varied - job difficulties, romantic problems, unexpected setbacks, family problems - but the sentiment is the same: life shouldnt be this difficult. Where does the expectation of a smooth life come from? Certainly not from the teachings of any major religion, nor from human history. It comes from our living in a comfortable society, it comes from watching too much idealised television soap operas, it comes from the ever growing list of self help books published every year. Friends, the delusion of an easy life is very dangerous. We live in an incredibly prosperous society, yet the levels of anxiety and depression are sky high. Divorce rates and suicide ratios are at historical high levels. When you believe life is cutting you a raw deal, you get depressed and then try to change something rather than staying the course. Life is hard. It has always been and it always will be. Hard times serve the purpose of bringing us to the end of our own inventions and causes us to seek for help outside ourselves. Let the troubles of this world drive you to your knees. Let them cause you to look for your Creator who uses the worst of lifes circumstances for good if you allow Him. Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. It is a promise.
