Scotland spends more than it earns each year. This is our deficit. We have ran a deficit for 21 of the past 22 years. These deficits contribute to the UK debt. Love it or loath it, austerity is how the UK Government aims to reduce the Scottish (and UK) deficit. Essentially, with or without independence, we cant reduce the debt (or have an oil fund!) until the deficit has been eliminated. See: theguardian/politics/2014/jun/04/scotland-deficit-first-year-independence-ifs-oil-revenue SNP Government data produced using a method devised by the SNP Government shows that the Scots per capita deficit is higher than rUKs. It shows that our deficit is £12,100,000,000: scotland.gov.uk/Publications/2014/03/7888 Being part of the UK means we can manage this deficit as part of a much larger economy whist having devolved powers over health, education, housing, etc which enable us to reduce inequality. Saying #NoThanks to breaking up the UK will mean more powers for Holyrood within the security of the UK economy. Lets win this.
