Scott Adams (the creator of Dilbert) wrote this post on startup culture, the pivot, and psych experiments. It is worth a read: dilbert/blog/entry/the_pivot/ Im wondering what you all think of this. My own comments: In a world where testing is cheap and resources are infinite, the hypothesis becomes increasingly less important. In psychology this leads to your typical big data experiment that has a bunch of highly significant findings that nobody is able to explain with a fundamental theory. This makes it impossible to tell apart the flukes from the real effects, and hence the results are particularly fickle (i.e. they are not robust to changes and do not replicate). Im not sure exactly how this translates to the startup world, but I expect to see a lot of bubble companies that hit a successful outcome, chase it, but find out that without a vision of *why* this outcome works, they cannot build a successful business on top of it.
