See? Just when yall thought I was getting boring, heres another addendum to the Bourbon Street debacle from earlier this month. I just checked my secondary FB page, and found a quite civil email from Anthony Arnold. Here is a copy of it for public record, and my further response. Hopefully this matter can now be laid to rest: Jason, It has been brought to my attention that youre telling people that I RIPPED you off ?? and didnt pay you for playing at Bourbon Street ? Why is this being said ?? you played here about a week or so ago with Dana ...and your band was paid the amount that Dana set with the bar! You and I have had NO OTHER BUSINESS dealings where you played for an event that i was involved with ..... So I am confused why you would be saying that I screwed you over in any way ??? Please do explain if there is some conflict that I am un aware of.. Thanks Anthony Anthony, Apologies for not responding sooner--this is my secondary FB page, and I dont maintain as often as I do my primary one. I never once cited you as having ripped us off. My bone of contention stemmed from the fact that you and Dana had agreed upon a midweek price ($300), and after the first set you got Dana on the phone and offered him two options. The first was to stop after that set and receive $100 pay. The second was to play the second set, but for only an additional $50. This all came about because of a rain storm that blew into NPR. Because I traveled forty miles through rush hour traffic to honor my end of the (original) agreement, I felt we were bent over a barrel. The $37.50 I wouldve received for those two sets wouldve barely covered my gas money and my additional expenses (which is to say, money Id be giving you back at the end of the engagement for drinks on my tab). Ultimately, your manager/wife made the judgment call to have us play out the 3rd set, per the original agreement/contract. And yes, I did receive my original expectation of $75, before expenses. My post, which I took down a week later, was a warning to my contemporaries on the circuit. I dont work on prorated terms, and I dont control the weather. Your manager made a big presentation out of the fact that we would be receiving our (agreed upon rate of) pay--and by then, the damage had been done by all of the clubs presentation of double-standards and vacillation. Therefore, I cautioned my friends--in Sons of Nuns and beyond--to proceed at their own risk. The unfortunate downside of this is that it impacts both of us. The venue received bad press as a result of the court of public opinion, where others came forward and told their stories. As for me, I get to deal with the venues scorn and ridicule for being a Norma Rae-esque whistle blower. Apparently, the lid blew off the pot after pay discrepancies with Sons of Nuns that very weekend. The main points I sought to get across in my original post were honest and forthright. Ive been a professional musician my entire life, and I have a family to feed. When Im treated like my professional efforts and ethics are easily sloughed off and of no consequence, I am incapable of taking it in stride and I feel I would be doing my musical community a disservice by not making them aware of the potential for a breach of contact and terms of pay. This extends to any and all venues. To reiterate--I did receive my pay, in full. And never once did I say otherwise. That was not misconstrued in any way, shape, or form per my original post. Regards, Jason Jennings
