September 12th Read 2 Chr 31:1–21 2Ch 31:1 Now when all this was finished, all Israel who were present went out to the cities of Judah and broke in pieces the pillars and cut down the Asherim and broke down the high places and the altars throughout all Judah and Benjamin, and in Ephraim and Manasseh, until they had destroyed them all. Then all the people of Israel returned to their cities, every man to his possession… 2Ch 31:20-21 Thus Hezekiah did throughout all Judah, and he did what was good and right and faithful before the LORD his God. (21) And every work that he undertook in the service of the house of God and in accordance with the law and the commandments, seeking his God, he did with all his heart, and prospered. What Israel did here is what we must do in our hearts, souls and minds. It was a response to keeping the Passover and hearing the Word of the Lord by the priest again. As we hear God’s Word particularly as we hear all that He has done for us in Christ Jesus, the Holy Spirit will begin the work in us of cleaning out the old gods of our past and our present. He brings to mind these things we trust rather than our Lord Jesus Christ. What shall we do with them when we discover that we have been worshipping other things, trusting other objects, replacing our Father in Heaven with the created to get us through the night and the day? If we have such faith in Christ and the Holy Spirit we will endeavor to act like the Israelites and break them in pies, cut them down and destroy them. Not necessarily literally but spiritually. For we may have use for food, clothing, shelter, drink, spouses, jobs, credit, money and the like, but we need to put them in their proper place. When the Israelites rediscovered the freedom of the Lord they brought forth their tithes, freewill offerings and the like with great joy. They had the gather them all in great heaps and make storage for them for the redistribution which the Lord God had appointed. We too when we discover that Jesus has freed us from the power of sin, death and the devil will freely give ourselves to support those who bring us this good news that it may continue in the land which we live. Hezekiah, stands for Jesus who truly does what is right and good before the Lord. Jesus served His Father with His whole heart, soul, mind and strength. Jesus gave up His life that we might live in Him. Now our Jesus prospers as we multiply as His holy people filling the earth. He is building for Himself a kingdom which He gives to all who put their trust in Him. As Jesus prospers so shall we all. Lord God, Heavenly Father, grant us such faith in the work of your Son Jesus Christ, that we turn from all our idols of this life and place ourselves into His merciful, caring hands. Amen.
