September 5 is Pierre Robin Sequence Awareness Day. What is Pierre Robin (pronounced “Roban”) Sequence? This is the name given to a birth condition that involves the lower jaw being either small in size (micrognathia) or set back from the upper jaw (retrognathia). As a result, the tongue tends to be displaced back towards the throat, where it can fall back and obstruct the airway (glossoptosis). The displaced tongue also usually prevents the palate (roof of mouth) from closing, leaving these children with a bilateral cleft palate (not lip). It is estimated that 1 in 2000 to 1 in 30,000 births present this condition. Our baby girl is one if these special kids!
