Carter’s efforts at Richmond High School in Richmond, Calif., as teacher and basketball coach led to the big-screen film “Coach Carter” starring Samuel L. Jackson. Roses also to Rod Weiss and his fellow Kiwanians for bringing Carter and Lynette Woodard, the first female Harlem Globetrotter, to speak at local events. - Roses to Monica Koechlein for her promotion from interim to full-time executive director of the Richmond Symphony Orchestra. The Purdue University graduate served as a special education teacher and was honored in 2007 as Secondary Teacher of the Year for Richmond Community Schools. - Roses to the Women’s Fund of the Wayne County Foundation, which celebrated its 10th annual luncheon fundraiser by surprising three local organizations with grants of $5,000 each. The unrestricted grants were presented to Genesis of the YWCA, Girls Inc. of Wayne County and the DIPLOMAS program at Richmond High School. About 175 people attended the event. - Roses to the Richmond Police Department for bringing back its Citizens Police Academy, a law enforcement education program for local citizens and business owners/operators intended to provide an accurate look at police work and the criminal justice system. - Roses to IHOP of Richmond for offering free pancakes for a good cause and to customers who consumed those hotcakes and donated to a worthy cause. National Pancake Day was a fundraiser for the Children’s Miracle Network at Dayton (Ohio) Children’s Hospital. - Roses to the high school seniors who were named Good Citizens by the two Daughters of the American Revolution chapters in Wayne County. Winners chosen by the Richmond chapter are seniors Darian Whitaker of Richmond, Ethan E. Fultz of Northeastern and Kaylee G. Cox of Seton. The winners chosen by the National Old Trails chapter are Samantha E. Olive of Centerville, Peyton B. Young of Hagerstown and Tayler Pennington of Lincoln.
