Seven grateful days! Day 2: air travel (which is also why this post is late. I wrote it while traveling but it didnt seem to post. Boo) 1) Im grateful for a surprise upgrade while flying from Lusaka to Johannesburg. Yes, it was the shortest of my three flights, but it was a lovely way to start my travels and good to have fresh in my mind when I found myself sandwiched in the middle of the middle row of four from Johannesburg to Frankfurt. That was MUCH less comfortable. Instead of wishing for business class, I was simply excited to have my own tv screen with endless entertainment and headphones to cover the sound of three babies that took it in turns to make sure we never forgot they were near by. Business class may have cloth napkins, but they didnt have private entertainment. 2) Im grateful for the ability to run and for airport staff that let me skip immigration and security lines. My layover in Johannesburg was just over an hour and I never would have made my connection without those two things. 3) Im grateful for Claire Powell. When I arrived at Lusaka International Airport, the girls at immigration informed me that my visa had expired on the 7th. As I was flying on the 9th, I had overstayed. I should have had my visa extended a few days before and since I had now committed an offense by overstaying I would have to pay an $800 fine. (Which, by the way, they said was 1500 kwacha. At 6 kwacha per dollar, thats $250. But I digress) either way I wasnt going to pay it. If I didnt know Claire, and if I hadnt spent so much time with her, it may never have occurred to me to say hang on, I need to make a phone call . . . Would you mind talking to my friend? They did, and as usual, she fixed everything in under five minutes. Lesson learned. Make sure your visa is solid before you get to the airport, kids. Especially if youre flying on a Saturday. And if you can, find yourself a Claire. On that note, today I nominate Claire Powell to post three things shes grateful for each day for seven days and to nominate one person each day to participate as well.
