Shanes Jukebox - Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots (Part 1), and The Sound of Failure by The Flaming Lips. Ah, Flaming Lips. One thing that can be said about them...they are Beyond Compare. I dont mean in the common sense that they are the greatest band in history, but that they ~literally~ cant be compared to anyone else. That doesnt stop me from trying however. :-) When I listen to these guys, I draw parallels to Radiohead. Both bands had that one huge - but simplistic - radio hit in the early-mid 90s (Vaseline for Flaming Lips, and Creep for Radiohead), and then probably should have faded from view, but they re-invented their sound, becoming more and more complex and nuanced as they evolved, and now are producing work that is thematically weird but also (sometimes) very digestible to the mainstream ear. Here are two such Flaming Lips songs; one on the fun quirky side, and the other lyrically deeper and more insightful...and also a *tad* long, but if you have patience for long instrumental passages, youll dig the whole sonic journey.
