Sharing girlfriends post......This post could save your life. Anything mechanical in your attic? HVAC perhaps? Please read. Wednesday morning around 8:30 a.m. we noticed a burning plastic smell that we at first thought was an old blow dryer we were using. It became increasingly strong and spread throughout the second floor. Searched to find the source, including in the attic, but couldnt. No smoke or anything visible. On 2nd floor we have smoke detectors and one of the newest Co2 detectors available. Debated about whether to call 911. Finally did. Three firetrucks and one Hazmat unit later, we learned that our HVAC in the attic had burning wires that had raised the carbon monoxide level to 93 percent on the second floor. Firefighter said since we had no smoke detectors or carbon monoxide detectors in the attic, we would not have been alerted had we been sleeping. The fan on the HVAC had distributed the Co2 throughout. Learned that your Co2 detector should be placed at eye level since Co2 does not rise like smoke. Ours was near the ceiling. So put some detectors in your attic if you dont have them already. We found a Co2 detector that mounts in your ventilation system and trips the HVAC if Co2 is detected.
