Sharing this document with you guys which was created by me for Bangalore CBR group with inputs from other Riders as well. Credit goes to each one of them who helped me creat this :-) Check all the fluid levels (Engine oil, brake oil, coolant). Check the air pressure (Cold pressure) on both tires. Check all electrical (Headlight, position lamps, Blinkers/Indicators, Tail lamp, Brake lamp, Horn, pass light) Check the brakes and make sure the pads aren’t at the end of life. Check the clutch play and smoothness. Check for headlight alignment and focus. Check and make sure no parts especially fairing are loose fitted. Don’t take the bike for long rides immediately after a service. Make sure you have ridden at least 100kms after the service to make sure the bike is fit for long ride. If the bike is due for service, get it serviced couple of days prior to your trip. Clean and lube the chain a day before the ride so that you will have a day time to clean the oil spill over the rear rim. Clean your helmet visor and if night rides, prefer to choose a plain visor over tinted one. Clean your RVMs and makes sure it is secured enough Carry all necessary documents (DL, RC card, Insurance, Emission Test Certificate). Carry enough cash for fuelling as most of the pumps in highways don’t have card swipe facility. If you are riding thru’ any isolated area, make sure you tank up before you hit such stretch to make sure that you won’t run out of fuel before next fill. Carry at least basic tool kit (Allen keys set, Plyer, Screw drivers, spanners etc.). Carry necessary spares (Headlight, clutch cable etc.) and also learn how to replace it during emergency. Carry a puncture repair kit along with a portable air pump, scissors. Also learn how to fix the puncture yourself. Carry minimal luggage to have hassle free riding. If your baggage is not water proof make sure you cover it with some water proof material to avoid drenching it in rain. Wear safety gear whichever possible (Helmet, riding jacket, riding gloves, Boots/shoes, knee guard/riding pant). It would be great if they are waterproof. Carry a waste cloth to clean your visor and headlight because you might end up in insects hit. Carry a bottle of water at least a small bottle. Make sure your luggage is tied firm and balanced equally both the sides. If it comes to a situation to ride in rain, make sure you wear waterproof clothing and your entire luggage are protected properly. Also ride slow in rain as visibility level will be very poor and headlight beam won’t pass thru’ as much compared to normal days. You have to take extra care if you are riding a Standard version over ABS version. If someone is asking for lift in a deserted place, act wisely. Your generosity might lead to disaster in such situation. If you are pulling over for a break, make sure the place is not too deserted. Our ride may not need any breaks in between, but it is advisable to take breaks for your sake for about 15mins once in every 100-150kms. To have a comfortable ride, don’t ride in tucked position for long time. Sit relaxed neither full tucked nor too upright. Also keep moving your wrist, shoulder, ass, etc. once in a while so that you won’t feel numbness. Wearing shoes is not only for protection during fall, but also protect your feet from dust and mud hitting your feet all time. If you are photo freak, make sure you have charged the battery well in advance to avoid last time tension. Carry emergency contact number all-time. Don’t have heavy meal before the ride as you might end up hunting for restroom on the way. Have enough sleep the prior night so that you can stay awake. Keep your senses alert all time because during high speed cruising, time to react will be very less compared to daily commuting. If you are riding in night, make sure you use pass light before overtaking and use blinkers for every lane change. Look out for vehicles behind you in your RVMs before overtaking and changing lanes. If you are passing thru any city/town limit, reduce your cruising speed and expect crossings and speed breakers. Dont approach any vehicle from behind at a higher speed rate than that vehicle. In case if that vehicle comes to a halt, you will have very less time to react and might not be able to pull to a halt in time. If you find the vehicle in front of you reducing its speed. Make your senses alert and reduce your bike speed too as we might not be sure if he is slowing down for pullover or for any hazards in front of him. This is very basic, but an important point to keep in mind. Don’t overtake on a blind turn either right or left turn. In case if you have a chance to overtake on a right turn where you can see the road ahead of you clearly, make sure the road is good and no hazards on the way which includes vehicles from opposite direction, rocks, sand, human, animals and so on. If you are not sure about this better to avoid overtaking as it going to cost just couple of your seconds. If the road is single lane, never overtake from the left. If it is 2/3 lane you can overtake from left, but make sure you have a full free lane and if the vehicle ahead of you is not following lane discipline, make sure you signal him more than normal before you overtake. Also make sure there is no sudden drop or height from tarmac to sand while overtaking as in worstcase you should be able to pullover. The lane markings on undivided highways are not for aesthetics. They have a reason. Avoid crossing over to oncoming lane if there is a solid line especially double solid line. That probably means a blind turn coming up, narrow road ahead or section with divider coming up or a fork. Avoid high speed cornering on highways even if it is divided road. There are lots of morons who come in wrong side especially if it is out of city limits where you will have very less time to react. If you find another biker ahead of your squeezing thru vehicles between lanes or overtaking, don’t blindly follow the same. Analyze the vehicles and road condition in front of you yourself instead of judging by other’s action/reaction. Keep yourself hydated all the time even if you dont feel thirsty. Drink before you are thirsty, eat before you are hungry Avoid riding during Twilight hours (Sunrise & Sunset) especially if you were already riding long. Neither Sunlight would be enough, nor your headlight would help. Carry a spare key for your bike and keep it in a safe place (with your luggage) so that you wont be left stranded in middle in case of loosing a key
